town twinning

Franco Scottish Week

In partnership with the Helensburgh / Thouars Twinning Association some seventy visitors from France will be guests of Helensburgh & Lomond and Argyll & Bute.

Twinning 2009 - Thouars- Helensburgh

Bonjour et bienvenue.Start practising those phrases .Why ? Because 73 citizens of Thouars ,Deux-Sevres in  the Poitou Charentes region of France are arriving in Helensburgh to celebrate the twinning of the two towns in 1983. When Scotland sent its princess , Margaret daughter of James 1 to marry the future king Louis XI in 1436 little did those involved envisage that 500 years later an alliance between Thouars where her ashes are interred in the Churh St Laon and Helensburgh would become established.

Reciprocal  visits have taken place biennially since then between families ,clubs and schools of the two towns. Many and varied are the groups that have participated- orchestras ,choirs ,primary schools, art clubs ,car clubs.athletic groups - to foster cultural and social links.A constant presence has been dancers from the Margaret Rose Scool of Dance.Presentations have been made as part of the Atlantic Concordat  from Luss and Rosneath Schools.Industrial placements have been made at Aggreko in Dumbarton. Visitors from each town have been guests at weddings . Young people from Thouars have been placed in local schools and lived with local families. On the last visit to Thouars two councillors accompanied the group.

Through the years ,visits have been made to the Scottish Parliament. to the Falkirk Wheel , to Loch Ness . Parties have taken place in the gondola on Ben Nevis. The Thouarsais have been piped ashore at the head of Loch Lomond.

The programme arranged this year from Sunday 26 July to Saturday 1 August is no less stimulating and varied. After a welcome at Helensburgh Bowling Club ,visitors are taken home by their host families.A busy schedule awaits them ranging from a visit to Kelvingrove and the City Chambers ,Glasgow,
to a Burns Supper in Luss Village Hall. There is a trip to Mount Stuart . This is followed by an overnight trip to Pitlochry ,Edradour Distillery and the House of Bruar. On their return from Scone Palace there is a ceilidh in Victoria Halls.

Finally, on Friday ,with their host families ,they will visit local shops and support the Craft and Food Fair in the Victoria Halls followed by a Civic Reception and Buffet .
When they depart early on Saturday morning ,tears will be shed and they will leave with many memories of a welcoming town.

INFORMATION FOR HOST FAMILIES

Sunday 26th July
The French visitors are due to arrive at the Upper Bowling Club in Abercromby Street at 6.00pm if they get held up we will telephone you to save you waiting too long at the club.  We do not anticipate the reception taking very long.  It will be a welcoming drink for hosts and visitors and a short welcoming speech. Once you have been introduced to your families (new hosts) you will be all able to go home.  Dinner with host families

Monday 27th July
If you can try and be at Victoria Hall at 9.00am hopefully we will leave at 9.15am prompt to go to Glasgow.  Unless you are coming to Glasgow with the group you won’t see your visitors  again until 10.30pm pick up at Victoria Hall.  Unless arrangements have been previously made to pick them up at Luss after the’Burns Supper’.

Tuesday 28th July
Again the same arrangements as above 9.00am for 9.15am departure.  As we will be going to Isle of Bute by ferry from Wemyss Bay it is imperative we leave on time as the ferry won’t wait for us.   Once again unless you have made arrangements to travel with us you won’t see your visitors again until approximately 6.30pm at Victoria Hall.  Dinner with host families.

Wednesday 29th July
This information is only for hosts with French visitors going to Pitlochry for 2 days.

We will leave Victoria Hall at 9.15am.  Please can you supply your guests with a travel rug or small folding chairs for the picnic  (these will have to go on the coach).  The coach should arrive back at Victoria Hall at 5.00pm on Thursday 30th July.  Dinner with host families.  Then a Ceilidh for all (hosts and visitors) at Victoria Hall at 8.00pm until 11.00pm  please can we ask you to supply your own drinks and nibbles (no nuts please).  Hopefully we can teach our French friends some Scottish dances.

Friday 31st July
This is the day for you to show our visitors Helensburgh.  Starting with the Craft and Food Fair in the Victoria Hall which has been put on especially for them.  Then Helensburgh itself where many of the shops have been especially cooperative in decorating their shops and some giving discounts on their products.  This is the only day you will need to provide lunch for them.   In the evening there will be a Civic Reception.  This is a formal evening (a chance to dress up, kilts etc) to which many dignitaries have been invited.  All French guests (including children) will be able to attend this function but for obvious reasons we will have to restrict the Scottish people to 2 per hosting family.  The time for the Civic Reception is 7.30pm until 10.00pm.  There will be a substantial buffet provided.

All information about the Food and Craft Fair and the Civic Reception (including the special Homecoming Whisky) was on the handout you received from Tony Dance at the host meeting.  I may have emailed it to some of you who were unable to attend.

Saturday 1st August
Our visitors leave from Vicoria Hall at 6.30am.  Please can you provide your guests with a small packed lunch for the journey.
